TOP - Terahertz OutPhasing

Enabling an ever-increasing data rate will require the transition to higher frequencies in the sub-THz region. Both academia and industry are already advancing methods and designs to enable the 6th generation of mobile communications. However, the targeted frequencies will most probably fall in the D-band. Even though the use of this band implies several challenges, many steps forward have been made, giving already promising results by exploiting pre-existing methodologies. New opportunities and technology impairments will find their place at sub-THz and THz frequencies, which will be employed for intradevice communications, kiosk downloads, and board-to-board wireless links for datacenters or high-density computing (HDC), virtual reality, radio-over-fiber, imaging, sensing, and new radar applications such as wireless gesture recognition or 3D scanning. However, in order to fully exploit the sub-THz bands for data communication, the challenges in designing high-performance frontends in the THz-range will be addressed in this project.
