Software Engineering of a Quantum Computer Firmware and Hardware Characterization Stack using Agile Methods

The proposed project devises an agile software engineering (SE) method for the efficient engineering of quantum computer firmware (QCF). The funded doctoral student resorts to insights from 50 years of SE research and practice to devise and evaluate the method in QCF practice. The method will allow QCF developers, who are often physicists with little to no SE background, the improvement of the maintainability, quality, and usability of QCF functionality. These characteristics are desperately needed by the quantum computing research community where software usually emerges as a by-product and is often not reusable across research activities or institutions.
